It’s that time of the New Year where people are still inspired to increase happiness and get on the right foot. We always make a point to say what we will do, but sometimes it’s the things we stop doing that are impactful.

Instead of piling more on the to-do list, kick off the dead weight by focusing on actions you won’t do. The following is a “don’t-do” list of unproductive behaviors that mentally strong people avoid.

1. Dwelling On The Past

Mentally strong individuals focus on the present moment and on the future. They understand that the past is out of their control and while you can plan for the far future, it’s  unpredictable.

2. Staying In Their Comfort Zone

The comfort zone is a dangerous place to be, thoughts of growth opportunities are often ignored and remaining stagnant can bring on another set of issues. Such as being afraid to take risks and reach for more.

3. Unable To Accept Critique

Successful people are open to critique and gladly accept advice. Why do you think business constantly ask customers for feedback? Being open the opinion of others can clue you in on things you may not be aware. Don’t let ego get the best of you; if someone has great advice, take it and appreciate that they care enough to tell you.

4. Resisting Change

What the mentally strong understand that the mentally weak do not is that change is unavoidable. Trying to avoid the inevitable is pointless, adapting is a matter of survival.

5. Having A Closed Mind

You don’t know everything, accept it now and things will become much easier for you.  Being closed minded prevents you from learning and opening yourself to new experiences that could be life changing. Not to mention the day you stop learning, is the day you die.

6. Not Making Your Own Decisions

Take control of your life. It may sound cheesy but only you should be making your decisions; you can’t allow others to make them for you. All this does is shift the responsibility from you to someone else, but the only person failing in the end is you.

7. Being Jealous Of Others Successes

When others succeed, you should be happy. If they can do it, so can you. The success of others does not lessen your chances. If anything, it should motivate you to keep pushing forward. Moreover they can be a valuable resource to help you. Instead of hating, probe their minds and you may discover valuable information.

8. Thinking About Failure

We can only achieve what we think we can. The mentally strong understand this and use it to their advantage. Of course there’s a chance you may fail, but how you bounce back from the step down determines everything, as long as there is the chance you may succeed, it’s worth trying. There are many well known people that had the odds again them, but they tired anyway.

9. Feeling Sorry For Themselves

Sometimes you fall down, but that’s why recoveries are celebrated and respected. The difference between the successful and unsuccessful is the way they handle challenges. Down in the dumps? Giving up is the easy thing to do. Focus your thoughts on climbing out.

10. Dwelling On Their Weaknesses

Let no one fool you, it’s great to strengthen an area of weakness. The point is not to focus on it and forget about the positive. Doing so sends  subliminal messages that you’re displeased with yourself.  Surely there’s something to celebrate, write it down if you have to or treat yourself for your accomplishments.

11. Worried About Pleasing People

If you’re a people pleaser, you’re putting yourself in a position to be taken advantage of. Not because people are intentionally cruel, it’s because you never say no. Stop worrying about making others happy and focus on what you need.

12. Blaming Themselves For Things Outside Their Control

Would you blame yourself for a bad incident that happened to a complete stranger? Of course not, that sounds ridiculous. Somethings are out of your control and that should actually be a relief. The mentally strong avoid thinking about what’s beyond they’re control.

13. Being Impatient

Patience isn’t just a virtue; it is the biggest virtue. Most people don’t fail because they aren’t good enough, or aren’t capable of winning or succeeding. People fail because they are impatient and give up before their time has come.

14. Feeling Misunderstood

Simply stating information is never enough; if the receiving party misunderstands you, the message was not properly relayed. The mentally strong do their best to be understood and have the patience to clear up misunderstandings.

15. Feeling Like You’re Owed

Don’t feel entitled, you aren’t owed anything in life. Mentally strong people understand that everything is earned and are willing to work for it. If you want something in life, you owe it to yourself to go out and get it.

16. Repeating Mistakes, Again

Make a mistake once, okay. Insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting different results. The reality is, mistakes are bound to happen; but use them as an opportunity to learn and apply them to your life moving forward.

17. Letting Fear Control Them

If you know that you want to try something, try it. If you’re scared, then understand that being scared of failing must mean that succeeding means a whole lot to you.

18. Acting Before Calculating

The mentally strong know better than to act before completely understanding the situation and determining the proper course of action. There is always time to think logically, even if it’s 20 seconds. Mentally strong people train their mind to think before acting. Impulsive decision may seem right in the moment but can chew you up later on.

19. Refusing Help From Others

Even Batman had a sidekick.  If others are offering to help, let them. Listen to their ideas and watch how they move. You ‘ll learn a lot and will probably accomplish more. Not to mention, it helps to become more social.

20. Giving Up

The biggest weakness in all of humanity is giving up.  The mentally strong sweat it out and put up a strong fight. Only do things if they are important to you; forget the things that aren’t important to you. If they’re important to you, then pursue them until you succeed. No exceptions, ever.
