Barkhad Abdi- Best Supporting Actors (Captain Phillips)

Adbi’s nominations is probably the most triumphant and deserved nomitations of this years’s Gold Globes. The 28 year old Somalian actor and limousine driver saw the casting on a local TV channel when he decided to stand in line with many others. After several rounds, he finally landed the role. Surprisingly, Abdi and hanks didn’t meet until their first scene together, the two character interacted so well together on screen you were watching “Muse” just as much as “Captian Phillips.” Amazing for this to be his first film.

Chiwetel Ejiofor

Chiwetel Ejiofor – Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (12 years a Slave)

Though he’s been in several high profile films such as Salt, Half of A Yellow Sun, and American Gangster it was his most recent role that brought the most acclaim. The Nigerian actor drew inspiration from his roots, as Nigeria was one of the largest slave shipping ports. Ejiofor admits to being terrified of playing the role at first. Competing in the same category against Idris Elba, Chiwetel held it down in 12 Years A Slave.

*Chiwetel was also nominated in the TV category for his role in Dancing on The Edge.

Idris Elba – Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom)

Will the recently crowned “Sexiest Man Alive” also take the title for “Best Performance by Actor in a Major Motion Picture?” According to Media, he was happy to be portrayed by the Nigerian actor. Idris was surprised by his own ability to embody the iconic leader, revealing that he was initially hesitant to take the role because “He’s light-skinned and I’m dark-skinned.” Becoming Mandela involved spending a night on Robben Island and getting to know Mandela’s daughters who  jokingly called him Dad.

*Elba also received a second nomination for his role on TV category Luther.
