The Tempelton award is given annually, to people who make it their life mission to fight racism, poverty and government corruption. This marks the second year that the award has been given to a revered figure rather than a lesser known humanitarian or academic. Tutu is the former Archbishop of Cape Town known for his fight against Apartheid.
1. He was named the 2013 Templeton Prize winner, and we’re not even half way into the year. How about that! The honor comes with a $1.7 million prize.
2. Tutu and the Dali Lama now in the same club. The Dali Lama was the 2012 Templeton Prize Winner.
3. He humbly accepted the award saying: “When you are in a crowd and you stand out from the crowd it’s usually because you are being carried on the shoulders of others,” said Tutu. I want to acknowledge all the wonderful people who accepted me as their leader at home and so to accept this prize, as it were, in a representative capacity.”
