Holiday shopping can be extremely frustrating and stressful, but for one man it turned deadly, when according to a Chinese news site he jumped to his death after an unsuccessful attempt to stop his girlfriend from stopping.
Tao Hsiao, 38-years-old, was walking around the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center on December 7 in Xuzhou with his girlfriend. The couple had been shopping at the crowded mall for more than five hours, and he was ready to leave. His girlfriend reportedly wanted to make one last stop at a shoe store, but Hsiao was fed up. According to the Daily Mail, eyewitnesses claim that the couple began arguing and turned into a heated argument. Hsiao was overheard telling his girlfriend that they had way too many bags and that she didn’t need to buy anymore shoes. The woman did not relent and continued to argue with him. In a fit of rage, Hsiao began throwing the shopping bags over the railing. The incident was caught by the mall surveillance cameras. Finally fed up, he climbed over the railing and jumped, hitting Christmas decorations and then landing on a stall before hitting the ground. Nearby shoppers fled the area in panic. He died at the scene.
A spokesperson from the mall relayed the following to the Daily Mail:
“His body was removed fairly quickly.
He actually landed on one of the stalls below and then fell to the floor so although the store was damaged it meant he didn’t hit anybody.
This is a tragic incident, but this time of year can be very stressful for many people.”
